ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BN98 Router: Wi-Fi 8 in theory, Wi-Fi 7 in practice

The ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BN98 router, supporting Wi-Fi 8, was tested for its maximum throughput speeds across different frequency bands and bandwidths. The tests compared its performance against its predecessor, the BE98.

On 6GHz, the BN98 achieved ~4500Mbit/s, outperforming the BE98 by 300-500Mbit/s due to cleaner signals from newer hardware. The GS BE18000 lagged significantly.

At 5GHz, the BN98 reached ~2300Mbit/s. Downstream surpassed the BE98 by >300Mbit/s, but upstream was slightly lower. On 2.4GHz, it achieved ~460-475Mbit/s.

In range tests, the BN98 showed strong 2.4GHz downlink, offering more throughput than the BE98. However, BE98 performed better in uplink, with both maintaining stable connections.

The BN98 did not offer extended range on 2.4GHz. Connection drop-off occurred at the same point for both routers, despite BN98's better downlink speed.

On 5GHz, BN98's results were disappointing. Bandwidth limited throughput, and it showed no improved performance over BE98 with attenuation. It seemed to exclude low-signal clients.

At 6GHz, BN98 was fastest at short distances (~4650Mbit/s downlink), >700Mbit/s more than BE98. This advantage diminished quickly with attenuation.

In 6GHz uplink, BN98 led at average attenuation, but BE98 outperformed at high attenuation. BN98 offers higher speed at short distances, not extended range.
