Benghazi's 2050 City Plan Unveiled by ZHA-Led Team

A ZHA-led team has presented a concept proposal for Benghazi, Libya's "Next Generation City Plan" aiming to guide its development towards 2050 amidst rapid urbanization.

The proposal, developed for A&O TEC, includes a Vision and Spatial Strategy to translate the city's character into an adaptable development framework. It also features a Digital Planning Hub, an evidence-based model mapping the city's potential and growth factors.

Benghazi, a historic Mediterranean port city, is experiencing significant growth and renewal. A&O TEC proposed a "coordinated urban framework" to protect its waterfront, celebrate heritage, and foster a more connected and resilient city.

The project comprises two parts: the Vision and Spatial Strategy, which outlines connecting historic and new areas via transport and pedestrian routes while identifying employment zones. This framework aims for managed expansion and integration of natural areas for sustainable water management.

The Benghazi 2050: Digital Planning Hub supports the spatial framework with evaluated datasets on urban, socio-economic, environmental, and infrastructural conditions. It maps growth directions and integrates data for stakeholder engagement.

The Digital Planning Hub is intended as a starting point for the Benghazi 2050 plan and a foundation for a dynamic digital twin. It includes GIS data, 3D models, population and land-use information, transport networks, environmental analysis, and future scenarios.
