Yuelang Road Block Quality Enhancement

TJAD Original Design Studio has completed a comprehensive quality enhancement project for Yuelang Road in Hangzhou, China, aiming to transform a utilitarian street into a vibrant public space.

Located in Hangzhou's Qianjiang Century City, the 330-meter Yuelang Road was previously dominated by vehicular traffic, parking, and logistical activities, with fragmented building frontages. This created a commercial-office backstreet lacking spaces for pause and interaction.

The renewal project integrates the roadway, pedestrian areas, and building frontages into a cohesive design. Key interventions include relocating surface parking, reorganizing the street's cross-section, and opening up building frontages.

The design introduces seating, outdoor dining areas, and spaces for public activities, fostering a continuous pedestrian and public-space system.

Drawing inspiration from the area's nightscape, the project incorporates lunar phases as a recurring motif in structures, lighting, and street furniture.

These elements aim to create opportunities for rest, outdoor dining, social interaction, and nighttime activities, complementing the road's primary circulation functions.

The project covers an area of 69,900 m² and is scheduled for completion in 2025.
