DIY Microprocessor Fabrication Demonstrated
A recent project showcases the creation of a custom microprocessor using wafer.space, a service for integrated circuit fabrication.

The microprocessor features a transport-triggered architecture with two busses and incorporates memory and peripherals, functioning more like a system-on-chip. The design process, utilizing Spade, is detailed from conception through fabrication.
Fabrication involves steps beyond standard PCB design rules. The resulting chip is housed in a carrier with clear epoxy, revealing the silicon.
The chip utilizes older fabrication technology, resulting in a larger silicon die. Unlike cell-based fabrication, the entire chip constitutes a single circuit.
The fabricated microprocessor has been successfully demonstrated running simple programs on a PCB via a breadboard.
While accessible to those with disposable income, custom IC fabrication is still a niche endeavor. However, the technology is in its early stages, with expectations of future cost reductions.
