WWI Pillbox Restored in Southwold, England

A rare World War One defensive bunker, known as a 'Pillbox', has been saved from demolition and restored by the local community in Southwold, England.

The structure, built to guard a strategic bridge, had suffered from neglect and vandalism. It is being transformed into a 'Living History' centre.

Replica blocks were specially cast to replace those removed by vandals, and new foundations were laid. A viewing window has been added where blocks were missing.

The Pillbox will allow visitors to experience wartime duty in a defence bunker overlooking marshes and the route to Southwold Harbour.

The East Coast of England was considered vulnerable to German invasion during both World Wars.

The restored Pillbox will also serve as a focal point for a local History Trail, featuring a 14th-century church, a medieval village lost to the sea, and remnants of the River Blyth's navigation.
