World's Most Liveable Cities in 2026: Copenhagen Leads as Asia Improves

The Economist Intelligence Unit's 2026 Global Liveability Index ranks cities based on stability, healthcare, culture, education, and infrastructure. Copenhagen retains its top position, with Western Europe scoring highest regionally.

Copenhagen was named the world's most liveable city for the second consecutive year, scoring 98 out of 100 and achieving perfect scores in stability, education, and infrastructure. Vienna and Melbourne followed closely. The global average liveability score remained unchanged at 76.1, as improvements in healthcare, education, and infrastructure balanced out declines in stability.

Asia showed the largest improvement, with its average score rising to 73.9. Nine Asian cities are now in the top 20, partly due to better healthcare scores in Chinese cities. Fuzhou saw the biggest jump, and Tokyo entered the top ten.

Stability remains the index's weakest area, with average scores dropping by 0.5 points globally. Southwest Asia and North Africa experienced the most significant declines. Muscat and Kuwait City fell the furthest in the rankings, and Tehran entered the bottom ten.

Damascus was ranked as the least liveable city, followed by Tripoli. The top ten cities are Copenhagen, Vienna, Melbourne, Sydney, Zurich, Geneva, Osaka, Adelaide, Vancouver, and Tokyo.
