IEEE Workshops Empower African Researchers in Publishing

IEEE conducted educational workshops in Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda to address financial and knowledge barriers faced by researchers in publishing scientific articles. These sessions aimed to equip participants with the necessary skills and understanding of the publishing process to increase their global visibility.

Researchers and students in Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda often face financial hurdles, such as high subscription fees and publishing costs, which limit their access to and publication of scientific and technical articles. While IEEE has introduced measures like discounted subscriptions and reduced publishing fees for its Xplore Digital Library, the publication output from these nations still lags behind other developing countries. This gap is attributed to a lack of training in research methodology, academic writing, and understanding journal submission processes.

To bridge this gap, IEEE staff and volunteers organized workshops covering the publishing process, IEEE publication venues, research integrity, and effective use of IEEE Xplore. Kristopher Zakrzewski, IEEE area manager, stated the goal is to ensure researchers in the region are on par with global counterparts and have the knowledge to make informed publishing decisions, thereby increasing their participation in global technology discussions.

Over 120 participants attended workshops held in Nairobi, the University of Rwanda, and Makerere University in Kampala. IEEE volunteers, who are also authors, shared practical advice on preparing, submitting, and publishing papers, including navigating the peer-review process. IEEE, a major publisher in electrical engineering and computer science, highlighted the benefits of publishing with them.

Local authors presented best practices, assisting attendees in preparing manuscripts, selecting appropriate publication outlets, and identifying suitable journals or conferences. Mayur Kumar Chhipa, an IEEE Senior Member and facilitator in Uganda, emphasized encouraging researchers to move beyond conference presentations to journal publications, noting that published research enhances global recognition and opens doors to further academic and professional opportunities.

The workshops also provided an overview of the IEEE Xplore Digital Library, a vast repository of technical documents. IEEE offers discounted or free access to this library for institutions in Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda, underscoring the direct correlation between access to literature and regional publishing output.

IEEE offers a range of publishing options, including traditional, hybrid, and open-access journals. While open-access publishing typically involves article processing charges (APCs), IEEE provides significant discounts or free publication for authors from Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda, aiming to increase research visibility and citations.

Participants found the workshops highly beneficial, reporting improved understanding of literature searching, research evaluation, and manuscript writing. An increased interest in using IEEE Xplore and awareness of ethical publishing practices were noted, contributing to a stronger research culture and enhanced global visibility for research from Africa.

Publishing with IEEE offers additional advantages, such as scholarship awards, research assistant opportunities, networking, and speaking engagements. IEEE also provides student grants to help cover conference travel expenses, further supporting the professional development of emerging researchers.
