Woo Jin Joo's Sculptures Blend Found Objects with Mythic Narratives
Artist Woo Jin Joo creates uncanny sculptures by combining discarded furniture and garments with clay and thread, often merging animal bodies with domestic items.

Joo collects forgotten objects from her surroundings in London, which she finds meaningful and imagination-provoking. These found items, along with clay and viscose thread, are transformed into human-sized figures and hybrid forms.
Her work explores mythology and folklore as alternative ways of gaining knowledge, believing that even mundane interactions hold potential for transformation. Her Korean-Chinese heritage and life in London influence her fluid artistic approach.
The artist is drawn to the history of discarded materials, imagining the lives they lived before she repurposed them. She also utilizes existing ideas from her imagination when suitable objects aren't found.
Scale is significant in Joo's sculptures; larger works invite viewers to engage with their own bodies in relation to the art, creating a more immersive experience.
Joo's solo exhibition 'Bodily Inbetweenness' is on view at Ruup & Form in London until November 13. She will also exhibit at the Harley Foundation in Nottinghamshire in early 2027.
