Automated Whip Cracker Achieves Sonic Booms
A whip-cracking machine has been developed to reliably produce sonic booms, the cracking sound of a bullwhip. This invention simplifies the process, which typically requires significant skill.

The machine's design addresses the physics of whip cracking, where a tapering whip transfers momentum to progressively faster-moving sections. The whip is constructed from a series of increasingly thin and light ropes, culminating in an eyelet connected to an elastic shock cord.
Releasing the stretched whip causes it to snap, generating a sonic boom. The machine incorporates a launcher mechanism with the elastic cord wound around it, a guide for the whip, and a spring-loaded trigger for consistent activation.
The automated system reliably produces a crack each time. Demonstrated capabilities include slicing leaves, tearing aluminum cans, extinguishing candles, uncapping bottles without tipping them, and accurately hitting small targets.
The inventor suggests this setup could facilitate studies of the cracking effect using schlieren imaging.
