Honeycomb Fossil Pattern Potentially Explained by Arthropods

A 150-year-old paleontological mystery surrounding honeycomb-shaped patterns in marine sediments, known as Paleodictyon, may have a new explanation.

A new study suggests these formations are likely burrows created by arthropods, possibly a crustacean subgroup, challenging previous theories that attributed them to wormlike creatures or even chemical processes.

Researchers analyzed existing research and new fossil discoveries, including a 530-million-year-old specimen found in Portugal, to test the arthropod hypothesis.

The study argues that the sharp corners of Paleodictyon would be difficult for soft-bodied worms to create, whereas the rigid exoskeletons and jointed appendages of arthropods are well-suited for such precise burrowing.

The researchers also note that the cognitive skills required for creating these precise hexagonal networks, such as mobility and spatial awareness, align with known arthropod abilities.

Furthermore, the appearance of Paleodictyon in the fossil record coincides with the earliest evidence of arthropods around 530 million years ago, supporting the proposed link.

However, some experts remain cautious, stating that definitive proof is still needed across various geological times and marine environments, leaving open the possibility that other organisms, like segmented worms, could also be responsible.

The study's authors propose future research could involve creating Paleodictyon observatories on ocean floors, potentially using AI to help identify the creators.
