Identifying Magnet Polarity Without Special Tools
Determining the north and south poles of a magnet can be crucial for consistent assembly in projects. Several simple methods can be employed to identify polarity.

The easiest method is to use a known, labeled reference magnet; like poles repel, and opposite poles attract.
A standard magnetic compass can also be used. The north end of the compass needle will point towards the magnet's south pole, and vice versa, due to attraction.
More advanced methods include using a Hall effect sensor or an electromagnet. The polarity of an electromagnet depends on its winding and current direction.
Understanding magnetic fields explains seemingly odd sensor behavior. A Hall effect sensor might react to both the front of a south pole and the back of a north pole because it detects field orientation, not just the pole itself.
Similarly, mobile phone apps using internal compasses can show fluctuating polarity readings even when the magnet's orientation is unchanged, highlighting the importance of accurate measurement.
Once identified, clearly labeling magnets serves as a reliable reference for future use.
