Robots That Jump Forever With Infrared Light

Researchers have developed teardrop-shaped soft robots capable of continuous jumping when exposed to infrared light. This innovation demonstrates a novel self-resetting mechanism for jumping in soft robotics.

The "ring leaper" design is simple, utilizing torsion to store and release elastic energy. The robot's design allows it to reset itself between jumps without external intervention.

Constructed from a liquid crystal elastomer ribbon and a V-shaped aluminum tube, the robot contracts when exposed to infrared light, causing rotation. The V-shape prevents simple rolling, leading to increased twisting and stored energy. This energy release propels the robot upward or forward.

Minor design modifications alter the robot's movement. A wider V-angle (120 degrees) results in crawling, a 90-degree angle causes forward jumping, and a 50-degree angle leads to vertical leaps. Adding weight to the rounded end can enhance jumping distance and stability.

The intensity of the infrared light is crucial; it must be strong enough to induce jumping but not so strong as to cause erratic movement. Proof-of-concept tests showed the robots could navigate various terrains and obstacles.

While immediate applications are not specified, this fundamental advance could be explored for environmental navigation, swarm robotics, and unstructured terrain navigation.
