Walter Torous Appointed Executive Director of MIT Center for Real Estate

Walter Torous, currently a senior lecturer and director of the Master of Science in Real Estate Development Program (MSRED) at MIT, has been named the new executive director of the MIT Center for Real Estate (CRE), effective July 1, 2026. Justin Steil will serve as faculty chair of the Academic Curriculum Council.

In his new role, Torous will oversee the CRE's teaching, consortium activities, fundraising, and major events, while continuing to lead the MSRED program. He will also manage the center's staff, budget, and strategic direction, collaborating with Steil on academic programs and industry engagement.

Torous brings extensive experience to the position, having previously been a professor at UCLA's Anderson School of Management and founding director of its Ziman Center for Real Estate. He also held faculty positions at the University of Michigan and the London Business School.

Torous highlighted the significant changes occurring in real estate markets globally due to demographic shifts, new technologies, and evolving work-from-home trends. He emphasized the center's role in educating future leaders, particularly in technology and financial markets, to navigate these challenges and ensure strong career trajectories.

To address these changes, Torous plans to expand the MSRED curriculum to incorporate more content from various MIT departments, including architecture, engineering, and the Media Lab. He also aims to increase engagement with the center's over 1,200 alumni worldwide.

An economist specializing in real estate finance, Torous' research includes empirical studies on derivatives, mortgages, and financially distressed firms. His recent work focuses on mortgage defaults, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the commercial office market using machine learning, and the growing importance of AI and large language models in real estate decision-making. The MSRED program has already introduced a class on AI and real estate, with plans for further related offerings.
