Thai Volunteer Camp Builds School Toilet from Reclaimed Wood

Forty-one architecture students participated in an 11-day volunteer camp in Thailand, focusing on building a much-needed school toilet using reclaimed materials.

The AKU ASA Volunteer Camp, held in Suphanburi Province, traditionally involves architecture students and local craftsmen exchanging skills. This year's project, a sanitary facility for Song Phi Nong Primary School, shifted focus from typical structures to sanitary design and site-specific plumbing.

Volunteers, with limited construction experience, learned to build the toilet, which was designed to integrate with the site's natural airflow and the shade of a Nontri tree. This created a functional space that could also serve as an area for rest or play.

The design incorporated reclaimed wood from the school's original 60-year-old Chinese-style classroom, establishing a historical connection for the new structure. All components were hand-built by the student volunteers.
