Vollebak Unveils Rock Jacket Made From 54,000 Slate Tiles

Experimental clothing brand Vollebak has created a one-off jacket, the Rock Jacket, covered in approximately 54,000 tiny slate tiles, challenging traditional material choices in fashion.

The Rock Jacket, described as a "sci-fi-style Harrington jacket," features five-millimetre square slate tiles, each half a millimetre thick, attached to a neoprene base. Vollebak co-founder Nick Tidball stated that rock is one of the most ambitious materials the brand has used, following previous jackets made from graphene, copper, and wood.

The creation builds on techniques used for Vollebak's Wooden Jacket, adapting an elastic marquetry process called WooWood for slate. Material technologist Steven Leprizé highlighted the precise laser cutting of the slate tiles as crucial for allowing the jacket to bend.

Vollebak aims to challenge the concept of disposable clothing by using a material formed over millions of years and to re-evaluate our relationship with ancient materials. The brand intends to develop the concept further, hoping to release a commercially viable version within two years.
