Venus May Have Swallowed Its Moon

New research suggests Venus, unlike Earth, may not have a moon because the planet's slow rotation and gravity caused any potential moon to crash into it.

Scientists have theorized Venus never formed a moon or that a massive impact destroyed it. However, new research indicates that Venus's own gravity and slow spin rate (243 Earth days per rotation) would naturally cause a moon to spiral inward and collide with the planet.

This contrasts with Earth, whose faster rotation (24 hours per rotation) transfers energy to its moon, causing it to gradually move away.

Astrophysicist Stephen Kane created computer models simulating Venus's rotation and hypothetical moon sizes. Most simulations resulted in the moon crashing into Venus, with more massive moons impacting faster.

While the study suggests a moon could not have survived indefinitely on Venus, it does not prove one ever existed. Finding direct evidence is challenging due to Venus's surface being largely resurfaced about a billion years ago.

Potential evidence might exist beneath the surface, similar to possible remnants of Earth's moon-forming collision found deep within Earth.
