Super Mario 64 Runs on SNES Super FX Chip

A hobbyist has successfully demonstrated Super Mario 64 running on the Super Nintendo's Super FX chip, showcasing the chip's 3D graphics capabilities.

While the Nintendo 64 introduced 3D graphics in 1996, the Super FX chip on the SNES allowed for enhanced features like those seen in Star Fox. A recent project shows that Super Mario 64 assets can be utilized with a new engine on the Super FX chip, referred to as 'SMFX'.

The game runs reasonably well, though performance improvements are still possible. A significant limitation is the 2 MB memory capacity, which may necessitate removing parts of game levels. The rendering technique paints frames back to front due to the absence of advanced Z-culling.

The developer plans to release the project once satisfied with its performance, offering a glimpse into what SNES developers might have achieved with such technology.
