LineageOS Offers Open Android for Phones and DIY TVs

LineageOS, an open-source Android version, provides an alternative to restrictive manufacturer systems, allowing hardware customization and avoiding bloatware.

LineageOS, a fork of CyanogenMod based on AOSP, supports many devices and offers OTA updates. Installation and major version upgrades can be complex, requiring Fastboot and ADB knowledge.

Installing on smartphones often involves overcoming locked bootloaders. The author's 2016 Xiaomi Mi 5 was revived with LineageOS, theoretically updating it to Android 15.

A challenge was finding the correct Fastboot driver for the Xiaomi. After troubleshooting, the author used the Mi Unlock Tool and a driver from XDA Forums to proceed.

LineageOS was also ported to a Raspberry Pi 4 SBC, creating a DIY Android TV. This unofficial port offers a TV interface and good hardware video decoding.

Installation on the Raspberry Pi is simpler, involving writing the image to an SD card. Updates are manual OTA flashes.

LineageOS is valuable for developers and users avoiding manufacturer restrictions. DRM-protected streaming might be an issue.
