AI Tools Aim to Predict Dementia Risk Earlier
Researchers are developing artificial intelligence (AI) tools to identify individuals at risk of dementia sooner, potentially allowing for earlier intervention and support.
The AI-Mind project, funded by the EU, aims to overcome lengthy diagnostic procedures for dementia. By identifying at-risk individuals before significant brain changes or clinical symptoms occur, the tools could enable monitoring and interventions to potentially extend symptom-free living.
Dementia affects millions globally, with diagnosis often occurring late. The AI-Mind tools analyze electrical brain activity, cognitive function, biological markers, and personal history to predict the risk of developing dementia within two to five years.
One tool, the AI-Mind Connector, identifies patterns in electrical brain activity linked to dementia risk. The AI-Mind Predictor analyzes this data along with other factors to further assess the likelihood of progression from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to dementia.
While there is no cure, some dementia risk factors are modifiable through lifestyle changes. Early identification can help individuals and families plan for the future and access support, even if only for symptom management.
The AI-Mind tools have undergone testing in Norway. Researchers are seeking funding for wider implementation and are working towards EU Medical Device Regulation approval, expected by 2035.
The project collaborates with industry partners and aims for accessibility, with tools potentially deployable on devices like iPads. The AI is intended to support, not replace, human judgment in healthcare decisions.
