ESP32s Communicate Using Visible Light and a Single LED
A new Arduino library called SecurePair allows two ESP32 microcontrollers to communicate using visible light, with each device using a single LED as both transmitter and receiver.

This method addresses the challenges often encountered with PCB antennas or data links using LEDs. The SecurePair library facilitates the exchange of keys and encrypted communication.
While the visible light communication is a novel hardware approach, the library is also designed to work with other protocols like ESPNow or LoRa. A potential application involves using light for initial pairing and then switching to wireless for data exchange.
The system leverages the property of an LED that allows it to function as a photodiode. The current examples demonstrate communication between two ESP32s, but the system is scalable to support multiple devices.
The video below showcases the SecurePair system in operation.
