PICO-8 Handheld Brings Virtual Console to Life

A maker has created a physical handheld device for the PICO-8 'fantasy console,' offering a new level of portability for the virtual machine and its games.

The project utilizes a Raspberry Pi Zero2W as its core, paired with a 720x720 pixel IPS display that perfectly matches the PICO-8's square aspect ratio. The display also features HDMI input and sound support, crucial for the handheld experience.

The maker designed a 3D-printed case for the device and also explored milling it from aluminum. A custom PCB, provided by a sponsor, ensures mechanical stability and features a full-color silkscreen for aesthetic appeal.

The design files and other project details are available on Google Drive. However, the PICO-8 software itself is not open source and must be purchased to complete the project.

This is not the first handheld PICO-8 device, but it offers compatibility with the entire PICO-8 game library, unlike some previous, more specialized builds.
