Fruit Fly Brain Mapped in Unprecedented Detail
Researchers have created a detailed map of the adult male fruit fly's central nervous system, charting 166,700 nerve cells and millions of connections. This comprehensive wiring diagram offers insights into neural pathways, gene effects on brain circuits, and sex-based differences.

The new map, published in Cell and Current Biology, details the fruit fly's brain and nerve cord, similar to a spinal cord. This follows a similar map of the female fruit fly's brain released two years prior.
The mapping process involved slicing the nervous system thinly, scanning with an electron microscope, and using AI to reconstruct a 3D replica. Human experts then refined the AI's work, a process that is crucial for scaling future, larger brain mapping projects.
The connectome has already allowed for comparisons between male and female fruit fly brains, revealing neural wiring that causes different reactions to the same stimuli. For example, male fly scent triggers aggression in males but courtship in females.
While only about 5% of cell types differ between male and female brains, these differences significantly impact behavior. Studies also traced neural pathways for visual and taste inputs, examining how sensory cells control feeding, movement, and courtship.
