Digital Shortwave Radio System Enhances Communication in Remote Areas

Rhizomatica, a nonprofit organization, has developed an open-source digital shortwave radio system called HERMES (High-frequency Emergency and Rural Multimedia Exchange System) to improve data transmission in remote locations.

HERMES operates in the high-frequency (HF) band, utilizing the ionosphere to transmit data, voice, and files over long distances. The system uses low-power radios (around 20 watts) to establish reliable links between locations up to 400-600 kilometers apart, suitable for areas lacking terrestrial infrastructure.

Unlike traditional voice-only shortwave radios, HERMES functions as a data pipeline, enabling the transmission of various file types, including emails, photos, and voice memos. This capability is crucial for emergency situations, allowing for the quick sharing of vital information like GPS coordinates, manifests, or medical data.

The system's ability to send files, such as photographic evidence of illegal logging, can significantly expedite communication and action compared to traditional methods.

HERMES includes optional encryption, which can be enabled or disabled by the user. This feature is particularly important for partners operating in sensitive regions who need to protect their communications from interception.

A pilot project with artisanal fishers in Bangladesh demonstrated HERMES's effectiveness. One boat, experiencing mechanical failure offshore, successfully transmitted its GPS position and an SOS, facilitating the rescue of its crew and vessel.
