ZX Spectrum Gets a Desktop GUI

A new assembly language program called ZXdesk has been developed for the 48k ZX Spectrum, bringing a desktop graphical user interface (GUI) to the 1980s computer.

Developed by [mindbox77], ZXdesk features menus, windows, and applications, resembling interfaces like GEM.

While impressive, ZXdesk is not a traditional operating system. The original ZX Spectrum 48k lacks disk drive capabilities, meaning applications are integrated into the GUI rather than existing as separate programs.

Despite this limitation, ZXdesk represents a significant achievement for the ZX Spectrum, offering the closest experience to an operating system seen on the classic home computer.
