Mazda Suitcase Car Replica Built

A replica of Mazda's 1991 suitcase car has been built, aiming to recreate the functionality of the original prototype.

In 1991, Mazda created three go-kart prototypes housed within Samsonite suitcases, intended as a competitor to the Honda Motocompo. Following media appearances, two prototypes were destroyed, leaving only one in collector hands.

Inspired by the original, a builder recreated the suitcase car. They utilized a small gas motor from a pocket rocket and a welded aluminum frame within the suitcase.

The replica achieved a top speed of 33 kph (20 mph), exceeding the original's stated speed. The current build weighs 56.8 lbs, with potential for further refinement to meet airline weight limits.

The builders consulted with the owner of the sole remaining original prototype for information on its functionality.
