EDG C++ Compiler Frontend Now Open Source
The Edison Design Group (EDG) has open-sourced its C++ compiler frontend, transitioning management to the non-profit C++ Alliance. Source code is now available on GitHub.

EDG, a company developing compiler frontends since 1988, will cease operations in 2026 and adopt an open-source model. Their frontends are utilized in commercial products like the Intel C++ compiler, Microsoft’s VC++, and NVIDIA’s CUDA compiler.
While not the sole C++ frontend, EDGCPP is notable for its support of advanced features and its extensive use in demanding commercial applications. Many C++ developers have encountered it through tools like MSVC and the Intel Compiler Collection.
The move is anticipated to impact the broader open-source C++ ecosystem, particularly in relation to GCC and LLVM's Clang.
