Copenhagen Architecture Biennial Announces "Elements" Theme for 2027 Edition
The Copenhagen Architecture Biennial (CAB) has revealed the theme and dates for its second edition, scheduled to run from September 9 to October 15, 2027. The event will explore the concept of "Elements," focusing on humanity's relationship with fire, earth, air, and water.

The biennial, evolving from the CAFx festival, aims to question the modern architectural promise of environmental control in an era of climate change. It will examine how architecture can adapt to, rather than resist, elemental forces.
The curatorial approach critiques the notion of unlimited technological development, acknowledging that architecture's historical role in managing environments is becoming increasingly unattainable due to rising global temperatures, pollution, and resource scarcity.
Josephine Michau, part of the Curatorial Collective, stated that the biennial will explore designing from a position of dependence on elements rather than perceived mastery, emphasizing buildings that connect us to the environment.
The program will span multiple venues across Copenhagen, featuring four exhibitions dedicated to the elements, an open call for pavilions, and a professional symposium titled "Assemble!" which will focus on policy and regulatory structures.
The "Assemble!" symposium follows the inaugural edition's call for new legislation, indicating a continued focus on policy's role in urban development and resource management.
An open call for pavilion proposals will invite architects, designers, and researchers to respond to the "Elements" theme, with details to be announced on the CAB website.
Further program details, including exhibiting artists, pavilion winners, symposium speakers, and public events, will be released closer to the biennial's opening.
