Shuling Guo's "Temple II" Explores Memory and Spirituality

Artist Shuling Guo's solo exhibition, "Temple II," at Hollis Taggart draws on her memories of growing up in Chaoshan, China, blending spiritual and folk traditions with nature and sacred symbolism.

Guo's dreamlike, symmetrical paintings explore themes of memory, presence, and loss, coinciding with significant life events for the artist. Elements like blossoms and flames allude to life's transience, beauty, and fragility.

Influenced by her childhood experiences with ceremony and ritual in Guangdong Province, Guo views the body and mind as a temple. Her work incorporates local Daoist, Buddhist, and folk customs, with frequent visits to village temples shaping her visual memory.

The compositions are informed by Early Renaissance religious imagery, featuring arch-like structures with drooping flowers or perched birds. The use of oil paint and colored pencil creates diffused, otherworldly forms, evoking spiritualist paintings and sensuality through floral motifs.
