Studio Iron Exhibition Features Unique Material Combinations

Artist Isamaya Ffrench's second Studio Iron show, part of the London Design Festival, highlights 27 creatives exploring unconventional material pairings.

The exhibition, curated by Alex Tieghi-Walker for the Perfectly Imperfect program, showcases pieces that challenge traditional material associations. Ffrench, a makeup artist and creative director, launched Studio Iron to focus on collectible design and the tactile nature of objects.

Featured works include an armchair by Andu Masebo, a hammered steel pouf with a linen cushion by Jesse Butterfield and Jane Wright, and an angular armchair by tattoo artist Thomas Cardiff made from steel, cowhide, and tattooed leather.

Other notable pieces include a resin lamp by Marten Herma Anderson, a rubber-encased bulb by Atelier Fomenta, a stainless steel coat rack by Andu Masebo, and a hammered steel mirror by Butterfield.

Blacksmith Barnaby Lewis presents a skeletal chair, while Wretched Flowers displays a stainless steel floor lamp covered in chainmail, gemstones, and glass beads.

Ffrench expressed interest in the artists' process, tools, and raw materials, valuing the opportunity to see pieces in person and understand their creation.

Ffrench hopes to expand Studio Iron into an interdisciplinary agency supporting young designers, noting London's openness to diverse creative practices and its support for emerging artists.

The Studio Iron exhibition runs from September 12 to 20 as part of the London Design Festival.
