Stefano Boeri Architetti to Design Affordable Timber Housing in Ibiza

Stefano Boeri Architetti has won a competition to design "Sa Casa," a new affordable housing development in Ibiza, Spain, featuring approximately 190 rental apartments.

The project utilizes a prefabricated timber construction system with adaptable layouts and shared open spaces, organized around the relationship between residential buildings, landscape, and public areas.

Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) will be used for construction, with components prefabricated off-site for faster assembly, reduced waste, and minimal disruption. Modular layouts will allow apartments to be reconfigured over time, accommodating diverse household needs.

The design features four volumes creating shared spaces like a central green area and courtyards. Integrated shared workspaces and communal areas are part of the modular system. Native vegetation will be used in open spaces and on roofs for shade, air quality improvement, and urban heat island mitigation.

The building arrangement aims to connect visually and physically with the surrounding context. The environmental strategy includes photovoltaic panels for renewable energy, natural ventilation, and water management systems.
