Cell Division Inspires Shanghai Pharmaceutical Research Campus Design
Architecture studio BDP has designed a new pharmaceutical research campus in Shanghai, China, for Chia Tai Tianqing Pharmaceutical Group (CTTQ). The 186,000-square-meter facility's design is inspired by the process of cell division.

The campus features two pairs of interconnected buildings, with glass bridges linking them, visually representing cells splitting. The cores of the research buildings are split to allow for flexible laboratory spaces.
One research building connects to staff accommodation, while the other links to a taller administrative building that serves as a focal point and includes a conference center.
A raised sky bridge connects all four buildings, curving around the site and offering indoor and outdoor spaces for interaction. This bridge also provides access to amenities like cafes, a canteen, and a gym located on lower levels.
The campus layout is designed to create distinct destinations and break down the overall scale. It prioritizes natural light, fresh air, and spaces for meeting, eating, and exercise.
Passive design strategies were implemented, including natural ventilation, facade solar shading, and customized facades. Low-E glass and photovoltaic panels on the roof enhance energy performance and campus identity.
The design aims to foster collaboration and well-being, creating a research environment that is integrated with the city and open to the public through a central park.
