Space Popular designs carpeted gallery for Nieuwe Instituut

Architecture studio Space Popular has designed a permanent gallery for the Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, utilizing a gridded carpet to organize and display the museum's collection of Dutch architectural history.

The Collection Gallery, located in a narrow space within the museum, aims to provide a cozy alternative to typical minimalist galleries. Space Popular intended the space to feel more like a club or lounge, encouraging visitors to spend more time exploring the collection.

The design features darker tones and soft gradients to create a welcoming atmosphere. The entire gallery is organized across a digitally printed carpet with a 50x50 cm grid and color-coded sections, dividing the collection into five themes.

This non-linear, multi-visitor approach to experiencing the collection was developed with graphic designer Mariana Lobão. Wooden podiums, also carpeted and color-coded, display physical models within glass cases, while other cabinetry houses interactive screens.

A 40-meter concrete wall runs along the exhibition space, serving as a projection surface. The carpet's grid dictates the placement of podiums and collection objects, creating an all-encompassing geometry.

The gallery will be open at the Nieuwe Instituut until May 2029, with an evolving showcase intended to reflect current events.
