SODA Converts Hostel into Design-Conscious Pod Hotel

London studio SODA has transformed a former backpacker hostel into Otherwander Soho, a high-density capsule hotel featuring 566 sleeping pods and vibrant social spaces. The project aims to offer affordable, design-conscious accommodation in central London.

Located near Oxford Street, the hotel occupies two early 20th-century buildings expanded by SODA. The design prioritizes an enhanced guest experience for budget-conscious travelers, particularly Gen Z, while aiming for broader demographic appeal.

Pod hotels, originating in Japan, offer compact sleeping spaces with shared amenities, making central city locations more accessible. This model suits short stays and travelers focused on exploring the city.

SODA managed both the architecture and interiors, preserving heritage buildings while adding a contemporary rear extension. The extension houses accessible facilities and draws inspiration from local brick architecture.

The interior features a glossy lobby with automated check-in via QR codes and e-gates, minimizing staff presence. This tech-first approach was developed with young people's travel preferences in mind.

Ground-floor social spaces, known as the Huddle, utilize warm colors and materials like pink and green seating and a neon bar. A color-changing staircase connects the floors, leading to pods located on upper floors and in the basement.

The acoustically isolated pods are individually ventilated and illuminated, with integrated stairs. Bathrooms feature rain showers and vanity areas with terrazzo finishes, contributing to a modern aesthetic that exceeds typical expectations.

Bold color choices and dynamic color lighting throughout the hotel create a youthful and futuristic atmosphere, adapting to the time of day and mood.
