Tiny Azores Home Built on 13 sqm Footprint

SO Arquitetura & Design transformed a small 13-square-meter storage building into a compact home on São Miguel Island, Portugal, expanding the interior to approximately 35 square meters by building upwards.

The architects designed a perforated metal staircase with timber treads to maintain light and visual connection between floors, avoiding the space consumption of a traditional staircase.

The home's program is stacked vertically: the lowest level has the entrance and support functions, the middle levels house the sleeping area, and the top floor contains the main living space, kitchen, and a work area, maximizing daylight and views.

Every element in the 35-square-meter space is functional, featuring built-in furniture for storage and integrated lighting, with a design that connects the floors rather than dividing them into small rooms.

The interior features exposed concrete walls contrasted with pale timber for warmth, and black window frames, with daylight playing a significant role in defining the space and visually extending rooms.

SO Arquitetura & Design views this project as a response to rising construction costs, demonstrating how an awkward, small footprint can be converted into a functional home through thoughtful design.
