Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Series Announced with Extreme Variant

Qualcomm has unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series, featuring not only the standard Gen 6 but also a more advanced Extreme variant that supports new AI functions. The first smartphone with the Extreme Gen 6 will be the Motorola Signature 27, later this year.

The basic specifications of the Gen 6 and Extreme Gen 6 are largely identical, with two performance cores, six power-efficient cores, and support for up to 24GB LPDDR5X/6 memory at 5300MHz.

The difference lies in AI performance. Both chips have a Hexagon NPU, but the Extreme variant has a redesigned version with 50% more memory, which results in better AI performance and less reliance on the internet.

The Extreme variant also supports Adreno Neural Fusion, a rendering technology that uses AI to process images at higher framerates.

Qualcomm claims that the Gen 6 series is 10% faster and 37% more efficient than the Gen 5. The GPU of the regular Gen 6 performs 35% better, and that of the Extreme 44% better. The test scenarios for these claims are not specified.
