Settle: Movable Furniture Installation Creates Temporary Public Interior in Ireland

Settle is a temporary architectural installation by TRESTLE designed to create a public interior for collective gathering and experience in urban settings. It draws inspiration from the adaptability of Irish vernacular furniture.

The installation uses a system of movable objects and architectural elements to form a flexible public interior, rather than a fixed space. These components can be rearranged to suit different events and civic settings, allowing the installation to adapt to various uses.

Settle explores the concept of a public interior as a shared 'common world of things,' responding to the increasing individualization of social structures and the shift towards digital interaction. It aims to provide tangible spaces for public use.

The project emphasizes reuse as a response to the climate emergency, focusing on how existing buildings can accommodate new forms of public life. The collection of functional, movable objects creates a temporary civic interior that can be occupied and adapted across different locations.

The installation was presented in the crypt of St Luke’s in Cork City in summer 2026 and is planned for installation in other civic spaces. It was recognized with the 2026 Arts Council of Ireland Architecture Project Award.
