Saint John Anglican Cathedral in Belize City

Built in 1812, Saint John Anglican Cathedral in Belize City was constructed by the British Crown using slave labor, local mahogany, and ballast bricks from England. It served as a significant site for both coronations and burials of influential figures.

Throughout its history, the cathedral hosted the coronations of four Miskito kings between 1815 and 1845. It also served as the venue for the funerals and burials of many of Belize’s most influential individuals in the adjacent Yarborough cemetery, the country's oldest.

The cathedral is situated opposite the former governor's mansion, which is now an art museum. Inside, visitors can find a wooden dove sculpture by Belizean artist George Gab, along with plaques dedicated by the families of early parishioners.

The cathedral is open from 9 am to 5 pm, Sunday through Friday, with entry by donation.
