Royal College of Art's Kensington Campus Undergoing Renovation

A renovation of the Royal College of Art's (RCA) modernist Kensington campus has begun, led by Witherford Watson Mann and Clementine Blakemore Architects. The project aims to balance conservation with transformation of the Grade II-listed Darwin Building.

The renovation will enhance the building's environmental performance, accessibility, and teaching facilities, while respecting the original 1962 design by Cadbury Brown. The approach involves stripping back to the structure, exposing concrete frames, brick walls, and an 1980s steel skeleton to reveal the building's inherent qualities.

Beyond physical changes, the project seeks to reinforce collective culture by creating spaces for collaboration, showcasing student work, and fostering dialogue. The RCA, founded in 1837, is a leading art and design university with campuses in Battersea and White City.

The renovation, which commenced in 2025 and is slated for completion in 2032, is being conducted in stages to allow continuous teaching. Plans were developed with input from the RCA community, Westminster City Council, and Historic England.

The architects are focusing on flexible spaces that support the testing and sharing of creative ideas, drawing inspiration from the original concept of the building serving as a backdrop for art. This involves a lean, low-carbon approach, exposing original finishes and using natural materials.
