Custom Firmware Enhances Round AMOLED Badge Functionality

A maker known as [curisama] has developed custom firmware for a wearable round AMOLED display, transforming it into a versatile device with numerous features.

The project, named 'The Badge,' utilizes a Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-AMOLED-1.75C, featuring a 466x466 round display housed in an aluminum case and driven by an ESP32-S3 microcontroller.

Initially intended as an air mouse, the firmware evolved to include touchpad capabilities, extra keys, a clock, and games.

The badge can also record audio, storing up to 52 minutes of sound in WAV format.

A notable addition is a liquid simulation with a sloshing water effect and a small boat, optimized to run at 18 FPS from an initial 3 FPS.

Further optimizations, including enabling the CONFIG_PM_ENABLE flag, significantly improved standby battery life from 11.9 to 19.6 hours.

The Waveshare part can be programmed directly from a web browser, making it accessible for makers interested in similar projects.
