Roman Telescope Exceeds Fuel Expectations, Doubling Mission Lifespan

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is projected to operate for at least 22 years, more than double its initial 10-year fuel budget.

This extended life is due to the spacecraft weighing less than projected, an efficient first course correction, and anticipated lower fuel use for orbit insertion.

The observatory weighed 8,056 kg, 18% under the 9,800 kg budget, reducing propellant needs for all maneuvers.

The lighter build allowed tanks to be filled to maximum capacity at launch, exceeding the initial 10-year requirement.

The first course correction used only 18 kg of fuel out of 200 kg budgeted, saving an estimated four years of operation.

Further savings are expected from the second mid-course correction and orbit insertion burns.

The telescope will require periodic station-keeping burns at the L2 point, which the fuel reserve will support for an extended period.

While other factors can end missions, the fuel margin provides a significant operational advantage.
