AECOM Designs Shaoxing Urban District Inspired by Local Landscape

AECOM's Huafa Financial Vitality City in Shaoxing, China, is a mixed-use urban district designed to integrate financial workplaces, hospitality, retail, and civic functions within a landscape-focused framework.

The design draws inspiration from the region's mountains and waterways, with a central park serving as the organizing element for buildings and public spaces. The architectural composition mimics the rhythm of local mountain ranges, creating a cohesive family of towers that still allows individual headquarters to maintain distinct identities. The arrangement of these towers is oriented to offer views towards Meishan and Jinghu National Urban Wetland Park, incorporating the surrounding landscape into the district's skyline.

A 168-meter International Financial Center acts as a focal point, its 45-degree rotation relative to the site creating a dialogue with an adjacent hotel tower. The glass facade features subtle variations that suggest ripples on water, while the hotel podium is inspired by the smooth, rounded shapes of pebbles. The overall plan organizes complementary uses around the central park and a network of connections, aiming to blend the scale of the financial district with daily urban life by linking workplaces with retail, leisure, and outdoor spaces.
