Reverse Engineering The Philips PM5139

A hobbyist has reverse-engineered the Philips PM5139 function generator, a device not widely known but common on workbenches. The goal was to better understand the hardware due to poor documentation.

The only available service manual was for a less capable sister model, the PM5138A. The reverse engineering process began with EPROM dumps from the early 1990s.

Using an 8051 emulator to run and examine the code, the hobbyist was able to modify the firmware.

The result is a custom "V2.0" firmware that adds six arbitrary waveforms and the capability to play simple music, along with other improvements.
