Researchers recycle rice husks into a wonder material that removes toxic dyes from water

Researchers have developed a low-cost, sponge-like filter from discarded rice husks capable of removing polluting industrial dyes from water. This innovation could help clean waterways and reduce agricultural waste.

Many industries, including textile and leather manufacturing, use synthetic dyes that persist in aquatic environments, diminishing light penetration, disturbing ecosystems, and polluting drinking water. Some of these dyes are toxic and potentially carcinogenic.

Materials that can adsorb dyes are a promising, cost-effective, and sustainable method for their removal from wastewater.

Scientists at Florida International University created an adsorbent material from waste rice husks. The process involves heating the husks in a low-oxygen environment to convert them into biochar, a porous material with a high surface area.

The biochar's performance was enhanced by combining it with layered double hydroxides, which are clay-like minerals. Laboratory tests showed the material effectively captured brilliant green and malachite green dyes, and it could be reused at least five times without losing efficacy.

The researchers plan to test the material on other dyes, heavy metals, and contaminants found in real-world water samples.
