Recyclable Timber Prototypes at BuildFest 2026

BuildFest 2026 showcased student-designed timber pavilions and installations focused on adaptability, dismantling, and reuse. The event, held at the historic Woodstock festival grounds, featured projects exploring various construction methods and material applications.

The "Wildflowers" installation, by Lehigh and Syracuse Universities, uses custom 3D-printed joints to connect timber columns in a flower-like shape. These joints allow for disassembly and reuse of the timber without damage.

The event, part of the "Acts of Construction" initiative, explored how structures can accommodate different uses and configurations, with future editions planned to reuse and transform existing installations.

Other projects included "Proscenium" by the University of Idaho, a performance space using rejected timber; "Contact Hi-Fi" by Cornell University, featuring modular trusses from pallet wood; and "BaleWorks" by Cornell University, a composting porta-john using straw bales.

"Flotilla," a floating modular ramp by UCLA and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, was constructed for the festival's pond.

"Flying Buttruss" by Syracuse University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute utilized reused lumber and hardware from a previous BuildFest.

Several installations served as venues for live performances and light shows during the festival, which ran for five days and remained open to the public through November in Bethel, New York.
