RCA Students Showcase Stools Made with Single Tools

Students from the Royal College of Art (RCA) have created a collection of stools using only one tool and minimal materials, displayed at The Lavery during London Design Festival.

The exhibition, titled 'One Tool, One Stool', challenged design products master's students to conceive and construct stools with significant resourcefulness. Twenty-three diverse designs are exhibited, showcasing varied approaches to materials, construction, and problem-solving.

Notable pieces include a stool made from interlocking rulers by Mayank Patole, designed to highlight measuring tools as load-bearing structures. Sue Ye created a seat from strung-together paint rollers, while Pil Gyu Jan crafted a stool from chiselled acoustic foam.

Anisa Yelek's experimental stool, made from melted candles, invites contemplation on presence and impermanence. Other designs feature hand-bent metal and wooden beads bound by wire, demonstrating minimalist and textured forms.

The exercise aimed to encourage students to explore what can be achieved with limited resources, fostering a direct connection between conceptualization and creation.

The exhibition is part of the 'Perfectly Imperfect' show curated by Alex Tieghi-Walker and runs until September 20th.
