Populous designs Vietnam's new national stadium

Architecture studio Populous has revealed plans for the Rach Chiec Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City, which will become Vietnam's national stadium upon completion.

The 70,000-seat stadium will be the country's largest, exceeding the current record holder by approximately 30,000 seats. Its design features a diamond-patterned facade inspired by local Nipa Palms and a retractable roof for environmental control and noise reduction.

Rach Chiec Stadium is intended to accommodate team sports like football and "90 percent of Olympic sports." It is a key component of a larger initiative to upgrade Vietnam's sporting infrastructure, aiming to facilitate hosting major events such as the Southeast Asian Games, Asian Cup, and potentially an Olympic Games.

The stadium is part of the 200-hectare Rach Chiec National Sports Complex, also masterplanned by Populous, which includes an 18,000-seat arena. The design emphasizes accessibility, connectivity, and flexibility to cater to diverse user groups within a park-like setting complemented by commercial elements.
