POOR Collective Launches Debut Rug Collection Inspired by Trellick Tower

Design practice POOR Collective has introduced its first mass-produced product: the Power rug collection. These flatwoven rugs, created in collaboration with manufacturer Floor Story, draw inspiration from the brutalist architecture and social history of London's Trellick Tower.

The collection features two rugs, available in evergreen and tangerine colourways. Each rug is flat-woven using New Zealand wool, with geometric patterns that reflect the angular design of Ernő Goldfinger's Trellick Tower, completed in 1972. POOR Collective chose the iconic housing block as a starting point due to its strong visual identity and its complex social history, aiming to challenge assumptions about places and communities through design.

Handwoven in India, the Power rugs will be exhibited at Floor Story's London showroom during the London Design Festival. This marks a significant shift for POOR Collective, which previously focused on site-specific projects like a games court renovation and a pavilion for night-shift workers. The move towards mass production is driven by the collective's desire to make design more accessible and integrate it into people's everyday lives, reaching a wider audience than their previous localized work.

The Power collection is a collaborative effort involving POOR Collective members Ben Spry, Akmaral Khassen, Shawn Adams, Larry Botchway, and Matt Harvey-Agyemang, alongside Floor Story designer Gill Thorpe. Spry highlighted the excitement of translating their design practice into a product with broader reach, allowing it to become part of people's homes and daily environments.
