Pend Architects Extend Edinburgh Townhouse with Red Brick Addition

Scottish studio Pend has updated a Georgian townhouse in Edinburgh, adding a single-storey extension clad in skinny red bricks to improve garden connection.

The extension, named Newhaven, addresses issues of a compartmentalized front and neglected rear spaces. It introduces a new secondary entrance leading directly into a living area, then to the dining space and kitchen.

The design aims to create a more legible entrance from the rear, connecting directly to the main living areas while preserving the privacy of the original entrance. Openings were widened to enhance light and garden views.

The extension's exterior, using skinny red bricks, was informed by repairs to the existing home's curved masonry walls. Inside, curved elements like a skylight and timber opening echo the original stone wall's geometry.

A small study is located near the new entrance, offering a quiet space with a garden view through a porthole-like window.

The garden design incorporates a winding path, dividing the space into lawn and paved terrace areas, with a curving brick-lined bed and steps.

Pend, founded in 2021, focuses on residential projects. Previous work includes extensions to a Georgian farmhouse and mews homes.
