Parque Ciudad de las Canteras (Quarry City Park) in Oaxaca, Mexico

Oaxaca de Juárez, known as "Green Antequera," derives its "green" nickname from the cantera stone used in its buildings and sidewalks, and its "Antequera" name from a Spanish city, possibly honored by an early colonial ruler.

The green cantera stone, quarried nearby, is a defining feature of the city's colonial architecture. One of the primary quarries for this stone was eventually transformed into a public park.

In 1988, the long-abandoned quarry was opened as Parque Ciudad de las Canteras. The former mining pits now serve as ponds, reflecting the striking green rock walls, some of which are equipped for climbing.
