Palm Temple in Bristol

An unusual nature-focused temple, the Palm Temple, has found a permanent home at the University of Bristol.

Created by artist Luke Jerram in 2020, the structure resembles a futuristic chapel made of wood and stained glass. It was initially made to celebrate the 600th anniversary of Brunelleschi's dome in Florence.

The architectural illusion features two spiralling wooden dome halves positioned opposite each other, creating the appearance of two giant palms pressed together in prayer. Dichroic panels act as changing stained glass, and a mirrored floor reflects the surroundings.

Inside, Jerram's Extinction Bell rings randomly between 150 and 200 times daily, with each toll representing an estimated species extinction worldwide within 24 hours.

The bell serves as a warning about the planet's declining biodiversity, transforming the pavilion into a place of contemplation and environmental concern.

The Palm Temple is open to visitors and constantly changes with light and weather, glowing from within after dark. It offers a unique space for reflection in Bristol.
